My son who is an active 2 and 10 month year old won't sit still during mat time at the library. He likes to walk around and look at books on the shelves instead. Does anyone have a similar experience or can give me some advice as how to get him to sit when he's suppose to.How do I get my child to sit and listen to a story during story time at the library?
I like the "do it at home idea"
Consider it practice. set a time and choose a spot in your home designated for "mat time" and start with a short story and then just keep practicing.
Sometimes you could also try using fidget toys to capture his attetion because it sounds like he is an explorer. There truly is so much at the library and so much that he is trying to see and touch all of it and sitting still is just not an option. Give him something to play with to keep his hands and his mind occupied. Don't worry about him listening to the story, he will still hear it even if he isn't looking at the reader or the pictures.

He may just be too young. My son just turned 2, but he's the same way and I just view story time as a chance to get him out of the house, around other kids and in a different environment. Whether he actually sits and listens to the stories is secondary to the rest of the experiences he has there. If he's not interested in sitting I doubt there's much you can do to make him that won't result in conflict. I'm sure he's not the only one his age not sitting and listening to the story. How do I get my child to sit and listen to a story during story time at the library?
Tell him if he sits still though the hour or so, that if he behaves he can have one of his favorite foods, if not then he can't go to the library. If not he may be bored at the story time, if so try to get him into a different thing, but still encourage reading with you and independently. Try having him have a story time with just you reading to him in the library. If he leaves then, he may prefer reading independently. Try to get him into Summer reading programs with arts, crafts, being read to, and games. If he does better then you'll know if he just does not like being read to.
He's just not interested yet. Boys learn differently from girls. They don't like to sit still they want to explore. Don't worry too much about it , My son never listened to the story times either at the library but the good news is that its a program aimed at infants and toddlers, they totally don't mind if kids want to wander its not first grade its just for fun. My son would always wander and want to play with everything else in the library but whenever the group started doing songs or moving around ( ex : put your right foot in take your right foot out) He'd come right back to participate, then back to story time, he'd decide to find his own books. He's 2 its a little too young to sit still especially being a boy.How do I get my child to sit and listen to a story during story time at the library?
They are never too young. I am not entirely sure why you are concerned with this? Perhaps the person who is reading the book is really boring! I think it is fabulous that your child wants to search the shelves for a book of interest. Why don't you read one to him that he is really interested in? Does he attend day care? They generally have group times, where the children are encouraged to sit and listen to stories and songs. I wouldn't be concerned by it, he will learn this skill once he begins to attend day care or school.
he may just be too young ..or..to inmature for the material read. A toddler story time should have some movement music, clapping and movement and maybe a slow finger play to get you to the floor...sit on mat...he does not understand the concept..
you could talk to him and when and walk in to take the mat and when he gets up you take him and walk out
i think coming right when it starts and sitting toward the back would make it easy to leave...
you could practice at home when you read a book have him sit on a mat..but you need to keep it short...he's good for sitting about 2 minutes and 10seconds...
I have been to many playgroups and story times. Alot of children just arent interested in sitting and listening to a story. IMO, as long as they are not disrupting the class..acting out...its ok. When story time is starting....try and have him sit, tallk to him before you go...lets try and listen to the story today, would you like to sit on my lap or next to me? Try see what happens,if he gets up..go quietly with him and look at books with him. Ask him if you can read "this book to him. sitting in a group is hard for some at this age but it is great for him to be around other kids so...go with what he wants to do now..keep trying but dont force it. That could get...ugly...iykwim.
Will he sit and listen to a story at home? At that age my son wouldn't at home. he liked looking at books but not listening to a story. My son went to preschool when he was 3..his birthday is in july..your sons...june????? At preschool he did sit and listen to the storys, but at play groups or at home..no interest. I think it was becaue I was there and he was comfy enough to get up..in school you kind of have to sit and listen so most kids do...
do it at home so he gets the idea to sit and watch
he might be a tad too young
